Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
