Just as the recent storm hit the north-west the prior day, Manchester City swept the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline represented consecutive WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them a significant margin off the league leaders with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to manage league and continental football with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always seemed this was the period that would fully examine this capability. Sadly for the away side, they seemed weary throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to make changes with a several changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

The hosts, in comparison, have no similar fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

Former City player Park came nearest, hitting the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to record a solitary shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any team who ended above them last season, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a strong standing after nine games.
