The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
